Hanging Out

I relax a bit, "Okay." I say unhappily, I really wanted to know what was wrong. I look up at the branches above us, I hear a slight noise, I look at him, "Did you hear that?" I ask him.

"Yeah," Nick said, instantly on the alert. Carefully, he got to his feet, unsheathing his Stygian iron sword. He peered up into the treetops, trying to pinpoint where it was coming from. He could hear it, getting ever closer, but he couldn't see it.

I look up, scanning the branches for any sudden movements. I take out my dagger, I knew I needed something to protect myself it it suddenly attacked. "Do you know what it is?" I ask him.

"I have no idea," Nick admitted. "Something that can climb, and is good at it. Small enough to stay hidden, but large enough to be a threat. Probably clever into the mix." He tensed up, hearing twigs suddenly snap behind him. He turned, but nothing was there. This was getting unnerving.

I looked on ground now, it sounded like it leaped down. I turn doing a 360 degree turn, but I still couldn't see anything, "It's on the ground now, I think." I whisper.I heard a tiny movement in the bushes, I kept my eyes intent on the bush, Looks like it's in there, I think to myself.

"I dunno about you," Nick said slowly, eyes darting around. "But an enemy that I can't see isn't my kind of enemy." He bent down and scooped up a rock. The bushes suddenly stopped moving. That was almost worse than when they'd seemed almost alive. He threw the rock. Still nothing. This was starting to really freak him out, but his calm expression gave none of that away.

I moved closer to the bush, keeping my dagger ready for anything that was in the bush. I kept my eyes on the bush, slowly inching forward, I finally reached close to the bush. I poked the bush with a stick, nothing came out, "There's nothing here." I say softly.

Nick looked around uneasily. "Let's go," he said slowly. "This is really starting to freak me out."

I smiled, "Sure, but where to?" I ask him, there wasn't really anywhere else to go.

"Don't really care," Nick said honestly. "Just... away."

"Okay." I say with a smile, I grab his hand and start walking to the entrance of the woods, "Um, you want to go to the lake?" I ask him.

"Sure," he said, nodding. He could see sunlight now. They were nearing the edge.

I heard something in the bushes behind us, it made me nervous, I walked slightly faster hoping he wouldn't notice me trying to get away from the forest, we finally reached the edge, I turned towards the lake and walked at a normal pace knowing there was nothing to get away from anymore.

Nick followed close behind, trying not to run. He was spooked more than he cared to admit and was relieved to finally get away into someplace that made sense.
