The Fields

Erik walked up the hill to the fields. There was so much open space that he felt wonderfully free. A brisk wind blew from the west, and he turned towards it, arms spread wide. Idiot tutted at him and he went slightly cross-eyed to glare at the squirrel perched on his head. Idiot made a sound that sounded weirdly close to a laugh before bounding off him and chasing his tail in a circle. Panting happily, he looked up at Erik and he couldn't resist a laugh as he bent down to stroke his tiny head.

I walked behind Eric,into the fields.I didn't know why,but he was looking...better.Like this place was making him forget all the bad things had happened in his life.I smiled.

Erik heard soft footsteps behind him and rose to his feet. Idiot made a sound of complaint and attached himself to his shoe, a mulish expression on his tiny face. Fighting back a grin, he turned to face the owner of the footsteps. He knew who it was, and smiled when the expectation was confirmed. "Hey beautiful," he greeted Christine.

I looked Idiot.I pick him up and turned to Eric.

"It appears to be a Sciurus carolinensis. Slight psychological problems make it believe that it is a cat, which is also the reason that it is so tame." He bent down for a closer look, frowning in mock concentration. "I'd say that it's been tame for some time, and bestow it the name of 'Idiot', in honor of his ideals." He stood straight up again and grinned.

"Dr. Sanderson will do just fine, ma'am," Erik said with a sweeping bow. "It's a fine specimen you've brought us today."

I let Idiot down and looked Eric smiling.

Erik cocked his head at her. "What?" he asked her. She was smiling and he loved the way she smiled. Idiot scrambled over to him, climbing up his leg to finally rest on his shoulder. He looked sideways at the squirrel, but did not push him away.

Erik started to casually backwards walk down the hill. "Define leaving," he called, taking another careful step back. He tripped over a rock and fell backwards, rolling down the hill. "I'm alright!" came his slightly muffled voice as he untangled himself from the bush he'd fallen into.

When I arrived next to him,I looked him worried.He was looking ok.

"Extremely," Erik said, fighting to smile as if he really was okay. He hated being a son of Acheron and what felt like his own, personal curse. Every time he felt pain it was always heightened, more intense, more acute than that of a regular demigod's or mortal's. Right now it felt like he'd been hit with a sledgehammer by a professional wrestler or something. Whatever the case, he hurt in every part of his body. Well, at least Idiot was fine, and it was on the squirrel that he focused. Blinking to clear his eyes, he looked up at Christine.

"Extremely," Erik said, stretching his taut muscles. He seemed to have an unfortunate habit of falling... or maybe it was just a souvenir from the last time...
