The Sandy Beach

I walk in and sit on the sand, the water just touching my toes. I look around for someone to talk to, but I see no one. Three years at camp and still no one to be seen, I think to myself.

Nick walked down to the beach, bored. He saw someone sitting by the water and walked over. "Hey," he said, sitting down next to her.

I look at the boy that just entered, "Hey." I say, "Been here long?" I ask. I'm not much of a talker so the things I say don't come out right.

"Nope, and already've almost killed a guy." Nick responded.

"Oh, sorry, I meant have you been at the beach a long time." I say, blushing from my mistake. "I sometimes say things that I don't mean." I explain.

"Don't worry 'bout it," Nick said, waving a hand dismissively. "I was planning on lying to Chiron about it anyway if he blabbed. And I just got down here."

"Oh, that's nice. I mean the part were you told me you just got down here. Arrrrg, I don't know how to express myself." I say in frustration.

"Hey, it's cool," Nick said. "I suppose you've been a loner then, at camp and before?"

I hated talking about my past, I would normally just start a fight when someone asked me about my past, but I don't know why, but I felt like I trusted this guy, he has been the only nice person I've ever met. "Um, well, yes, I guess I am a loner." I say.

Nick nodded. "Me too. Can't be much else if you're a demigod, I suppose." He didn't know if he trusted her or not, generally, he didn't trust people unless given a very good reason for it.

"Oh, I'm being rude, my name is Alexia daughter of Deimos." I say. "And who might you be?" I ask.

"Nick," Nick answered. "Son of Arai - the goddess of curses." Despite her heritage, she seemed nice and he smiled at her.

I smile back at him. I put my feet deeper in the water. "So, Nick, what brings you here to the beach?" I ask, I look down at my toes at twirl them around.

"Between you and me, I have no idea," Nick said honestly. "Maybe a certain pretty girl, alone by the water."

I start blushing, but then realize he could be talking about anyone, my blush fades away and a sad look comes to my face. "Oh." I say, slowly in a low tone.

"Hey, girlie," Nick said, nudging her with his shoulder. "I was talking about you."

My blush returns, I smile brightly. I stat feeling very tired, I hadn't slept for two days, I yawn. "You were really talking about me?" I ask.

Nick looked around. "I don't see anyone else," he said. "Only you." He smiled easily, but noticed that she was growing tired.

I look at the sky for sometime and think about my past, the terrible past that I'd always try to hide. I think about it for along time, slowly my eyelids closing, I fell down on Nick's lap and started sleeping.

A smile slowly spread over Nick's face. Well then. Pretty and nice didn't always go together in this world. He stroked her hair, gazing out to sea. He wondered what his life would have been like if his mom hadn't been a goddess. Safer? Probably. Boring? No doubt. Whatever the case, coming here didn't seem like such a terrible thing anymore.

I turn over in my sleep, I start dreaming about all the lives I've ruined by hurting them emotionally, I wake up, my eyes wide open, I started sweating and my face looked terrified. "They're. Gonna. Come. Back. For. Me." I stammer.

"If they come back for you, they're going to have to get through me first," Nick replied calmly. Poor girl. She must have had a rough life. He felt bad for her, wanted to do something to take away the terror in her dark eyes, but didn't know what. He was a fighter and that was all he'd ever be probably. "Shh, it's going to be okay," he told her, trying to sound comforting. "No one's after you."

I look around and remember it was just a dream. I hold onto Nick, still afraid of all the children that was in my dream. A tear falls from my eye, I immediately rub my eyes trying to regain my bearings. I look around and realize I was holding Nick, I immediately let go, "Um, sorry, I didn't mean to-, well you know." I say.

"Hey, it's cool," Nick said with a grin. "I hate dreams too. They can be way too real." He liked how that as soon as she became aware of herself things got semi-awkward. Nothing to do but deflect it. "Want to talk about it?" he asked her, slightly concerned. It looked like it had been bad.

I start to think of my dream, but as soon as I try, it just vanishes from my mind. "I would tell you but I can't remember it." I say, embarrassed. "It was just awful, that's all I can say." I reply, I hold onto him again without knowing my actions, just the thought of my past made me shiver.
